Harvard Book Store is delighted to host award-winning children's book author and illustrator CHRIS VAN ALLSBURG for a presentation of the new story collection, The Chronicles of Harris Burdick, together with contributor LOIS LOWRY and children's book editor ROGER SUTTON.
The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, originally published in 1984, was a collection of unrelated (except through Chris Van Allsburg's distinctive style) black-and-white illustrations, each accompanied by a title and a single line of text. The images beg explanation and thousands of children have been inspired to weave their own stories to go with these enigmatic pictures.
In The Chronicles of Harris Burdick, some of our very best storytellers have tried their hands at their version of these tales, with results at once mysterious, funny, creepy, and poignant.
This inspired collection of short stories features many remarkable, best-selling authors in the worlds of both adult and children's literature: Sherman Alexie, M.T. Anderson, Kate DiCamillo, Cory Doctorow, Jules Feiffer, Stephen King, Tabitha King, Lois Lowry, Gregory Maguire, Walter Dean Myers, Linda Sue Park, Louis Sachar, Jon Scieszka, Lemony Snicket, and Chris Van Allsburg himself.
Though online ticket sales have ended, tickets can still be purchased at Harvard Book Store and by phone at 617-661-1515.
Walking from the Harvard Square T station: 10 minutes
As you exit the station, cross Mass. Ave. and look for the newsstand Crimson Corner on the right side of the street and Curious George book shop on the left side of the street. Keeping the newsstand to your right, proceed along Brattle St. (you will pass the restaurant Tory Row). Follow Brattle St. as it curves to the right in Brattle Square (follow the sidewalk on the right side of the street). The Brattle will be on the left-hand side of the street. The building is shared with Algiers Cafe, Casablanca Restaurant, and Harvard Square Optical, and the theatre entrance is on the left side of the building—look for the sidewalk poster case and marquee.
