Publishers Weekly has named the Harvard Book Store 2002 Bookseller of the Year. The award will be made at a ceremony at the industry's annual convention, Book Expo America, on May 4, 2002 in New York City.

The award is made by a panel of judges composed of eight distinguished professionals from publishing and book wholesaling who are selected and polled independently to determine the recipient of the award. Booksellers are nominated by their peers, and cannot nominate themselves. The winner is the one American bookstore that is distinguished in excellence in buying, marketing, handselling, customer service, community involvement, management, employee relations, merchandising, innovation and uniqueness as well as business operations. This year twenty-five of the country's bookstores were nominated.

The Harvard Bookstore is the landmark literary and scholarly bookstore of Harvard Square. It was started in 1932 by Marc Kramer, father of proprietor Frank Kramer, and has been at the same location since 1950. Frank Kramer, who has been running the store since 1962, was the first recipient of the Friend of Writers Award, bestowed by the New England chapter of PEN America in the early 1980s. Publishers Weekly is the news magazine that covers the publishing industry, published by Cahners Publishing in New York.

The most important thing to acknowledge is that we've won this award only because of the caliber of our customers. We are the best bookstore because we have the kind of intelligent, demanding, discriminating customers who make us try to live up to their expectations. So you share in this honor.
