MARTHA C. NUSSBAUM was educated at Wellesley College and New York University and received her Ph.D. from Harvard University. She has taught Harvard, Brown and Oxford universities, and is currently the Ernst Freund Distinguished Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, appointed in the Philosophy Department, the Law School, the Divinity School, and the College. She is also an Associate in the Classics Department, an Affiliate of the Committee for Southern Asian Studies, and a member of the Board of the Committee on Gender Studies. Dr. Nussbaum has been a member of the Council of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Board of the American Council of Learned Societies. She has received honorary degrees from eight colleges and universities, including Williams College, St. Andrews University, and the University of Toronto. Dr. Nussbaum is the author of eight books and is the coeditor of eleven others. In addition to WOMEN AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, her most recent publications include Cultivating Humanity: A Classical Defense of Radical Reform in Higher Education (1997), and Sex and Social Justice (1999). |
