Harvard Book Store Author Series Presents:
Khassan Baiev with Ruth and Nicholas Daniloff
Harvard Book Store is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, November 19th Khassan Baiev,
Ruth Daniloff, and Nicholas Daniloff will be talking about their book,
The Oath: The Remarkable Story of a Surgeon's Life Under Fire in Chechnya. In 1991,
when the political conflict between Chechen insurgents and the Russian army began, Khassan
Baiev was a wealthy plastic surgeon. But when Russia began to bomb his country, Baiev gave
up safety and security and opened a small hospital in his hometown of Alkhan Kala. This is
his searing memoir, certain to become a classic in the literature of war.
Dr. Khassan Baiev received political asylum in the United States in 2000 and lives with his family near Boston, Massachusetts. He has been honored by many human-rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, Doctors Without Borders, Physicians for Human Rights, and Amnesty International. Ruth Daniloff writes frequently about the plight of refugees and the war in Chechnya, and her articles have appeared in many publications, including the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the Boston Globe. She and her husband live in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Nicholas Daniloff is the author of The Kremlin and the Cosmos and
Two Lives: One Russia. He has worked for various news organizations, and was Moscow
bureau chief for U.S. News & World Report. He is the former director of Northeastern
University's School of Journalism.
