Scene In the Store
With frequent visits to Harvard Book Store over a matter of months, a person is apt to spot celebrity customers like Steve Winwood, Christopher Lydon, Stephen Wright, John Tesh, and Peter Wolf (he was married to Faye Dunaway!), as well as authors like Anne Lamott, Carlos Fuentes, Cornel West, David Landes, Marjorie Garber, Louise Gluck, Gail Mazur, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Here are some recent sightings:When Vice-President Al Gore visited the store, he walked up to the information counter to make his purchase. A friendly bookseller directed him to the registers (" You pay over there, to your right, Mr. Vice-President.") He was wearing a very nice suit. Rock-star legend Robert Plant visited our store recently, and told bookseller Katy Papagianis, "I love this store. I would love to work here." Don't be surprised if you spot him doing some reshelving. He now has glasses, but his hair is the same. John Updike zipped in one weekend in June. He is a very nice man. He browsed, and then bought some books. Eric Liu, author of The Accidental Asian, comes in to the store frequently to autography his books. He's also a very nice man. Stephen King recently had quite a lovely conversation in the fiction section of the bookstore with bookseller Jason Picone. William Randolph Hearst III was in this past spring, and had the following conversation with Jim Boyd:Jim: And how are you today, sir?
William Randolph Hearst III: I'm o.k.
