Charles Handy
is widely recognized as one of Britain's top-tier management writers. He is the author of six highly acclaimed business books, including his most recent book, . Educated at Oxford and MIT, he has been an executive with Shell International Oil Company and a professor at the London School of Business, where he was one of the early faculty. Read a summary of Mr. Handy's talk!American books I recommend:
- , by Esther Dyson.
The best explanation that I know of what is in store for us in the digital age which is now upon us. It is easy to read, fascinating in its ideas and practical in its advice. A new edition, Release 3.1, will be out soon in paperback.
- Leadership Aikido, by John O'Neil.
John O'Neil is a wise counsellor of leaders, and he writes here from his wide knowledge of such people and from his long experience. His philosophy suggests that great leadership starts with setting your own personal house in order. Aikido is a form of martial art that practises self-defence without harming the opponent but which, in the process, promotes self-understanding and learning.
- , by Arie de Geus.
Arie de Geus was head of planning at Royal Dutch Shell and responsible for the early forms of scenario planning as practised there. This book is based on his own experience of that long-living company and of Shell research into the characteristics of other "centenarian" companies.
- , by Warren Bennis.
Warren Bennis takes us into the heart and soul of some "great groups," most of them not business groups. This book includes fascinating tales which highlight some features of groups such as these. It read more like a series of short stories than a management text, and that is its charm.
I have met and worked with all these authors and can commend them both as experts and as people who practise what they preach.
