Boston Globe society photographer Bill Brett has been taking pictures of the city's high and mighty since the 1960s. His first book shows their human side. With unequaled access, not only to business and cultural leaders but also to the community activists and philanthropists who give Boston its heart, Brett takes us into the homes and offices of the city's leaders, and out onto the streets where they live, work, and play.
The range of business figures alone is telling. Nationally known entrepreneurs are here, like Peter Lynch (former mastermind of the Magellan Fund), Tom Stemberg (founder of Staples), and the CEOs of John Hancock, Raytheon, and Biogen. But Brett has the wit and the eye to introduce us as well to the owners of the oldest family funeral home in Boston, a Newbury Street "haircutter to the stars," and a beloved doorman at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Brett's 245 black-and-white images, which are printed here in rich duotones, also include religious leaders, university presidents, nonprofit leaders, and the cultural, media, and sports stars who illuminate Boston. This is the Hub of the 21st century: culturally rich, ethnically diverse, and photographically enthralling.
