Heat: How to Stop the Planet from Burning
by George Monbiot
South End Press

Our Price: $22.00

I don’t often read a book which gives me reason to feel hopeful about the future of humanity, but the exhaustively detailed and painstakingly researched Heat actually does. Many authors are content merely to herald the end of the world as a habitat for humankind – Monbiot actually has a plan to save something of civilization as we know it. Beginning with a rundown of the scientific consensus on global warming, he goes on to describe what our way of life might look like after a 90% reduction in carbon emissions. While by no means a simple program, his ideas smack of common sense. Monbiot’s optimism is infectious, particularly when he writes about changing our approach to basics like public transportation and housing. Written in a lively and engaging style, Heat is a book for anyone who finds themselves wringing their hands, asking, "But what can we do?"
