Vacation is told in a voice I hadn't read before, and one that kept me up all night reading. It's a mystery why these characters are following each other around their neighborhoods and all over the world and how Deb Olin Unferth can show us familiar things through alien eyes, make us see, somewhat objectively, the bizarre world we're used to. It's funny and sad and you can't tell which is which. I loved every minute of it.
Cosmicomics is one of my favorite books of all time. Each section takes place in a different point in the evolution of the universe. Calvino places human characters there, before the Big Bang, in the transition from aquatic to terrestrial life, his protagonist always falling in love. These remarkably imaginative tales are coupled with some of the most intelligent and beautiful writing I’ve read.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
by Junot Diaz Riverhead Trade
Our Price: $14.00
Yes, it won a Pulitzer, so you already know it’s good--but you don’t know how good. I read it as I walked down the street because I couldn’t stop. Read it, be propelled through it, and learn something about the world we live in.
No One Belongs Here More Than You: Stories
by Miranda July Scribner
Our Price: $14.00
July's stories are wonderful. The narrators vary in age and between genders, but each has a self-knowledge that is very appealing. July puts onto paper private human phenomena--things we've experienced but never discussed--illogical thoughts, insecurities, desires, rituals. This book is funny, often R-rated, and hard to put down. Enjoy!
