The winners of the 1999 National Book Awards were announced on November 17 at the National Book Foundation's 50th awards ceremony, held at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City. In addition to the honors presented in the four categories--fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature--the evening also featured a special 50th Anniversary Gold Medal award given to Oprah Winfrey for "her dedication to readers, writers, and books."

John Dower's garnered the non-fiction prize.
