Since 1986, The Best American Essays Series has gathered the most interesting and provocative writing of the year, establishing a firm place as the leading annual of its kind. This year, Harvard Book Store is gathering together an exciting group of these talented writers to talk about the most recent edition of this well-loved series. Please join us on Wednesday, October 1st as Anne Fadiman, Atul Gawande, Marshall Jon Fisher, and Robert Atwan read selections from and talk about The Best American Essays of 2003.

Author Biographies:

Anne Fadiman is the editor of the American Scholar and the author of two books of nonfiction, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down (winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award) and Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader. Fadiman lives with her husband and two children in western Massachusetts, where she teaches nonfiction writing at Smith College.

Atul Gawande is a surgical resident in Boston and, since 1998, a staff writer for The New Yorker. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Oxford University, and Stanford University, he has been a laboratory researcher, a senior health policy adviser to President Bill Clinton, and research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health. His first book, Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science, was published by Metropolitan Books in 2002.

Marshall Jon Fisher has written on a wide range of topics for The Atlantic Monthly, DoubleTake, Harper's Magazine, Discover, and other magazines. He is the coauthor (with David E. Fisher) of Tube: The Invention of Television and Strangers in the Night: A Brief History of Life on Other Worlds. He lives in the Berkshires with his wife and two sons.

Robert Atwan has been the series editor of The Best American Essays® since its inception in 1986. He has edited numerous literary anthologies and writes essays and reviews for periodicals nationwide.
