Harvard Book Store Printing Services

With Harvard Book Store’s new Espresso Book Machine (we call her Paige!), we can turn PDF files into a high-quality paperback book in mere minutes. If you are interested in publishing your novel for sale worldwide, or printing a family cookbook to present to your relatives, or bringing your previously out-of-print book back into circulation, Harvard Book Store can help.

Benefits of printing your work through Harvard Book Store:

  • The author retains all rights to the printed work, along with complete control over layout, content, and design.
  • There are no minimum - which means there is no large up-front investment as usually required by self-publishing programs. You can print two copies today, and twenty next week. You may print your books as you need them.
  • Authors may choose to have their work on display—and for sale—at Harvard Book Store.
  • Books printed at Harvard Book Store may also be made for sale online at harvardsquarebookstore.com.
  • Authors also retain rights for non-exclusive distribution and may sell books printed at Harvard Book Store through any avenue they choose.
  • Author alterations – you can update your work and submit revised files at any time.
  • If for sale to the public, the author sets the book’s retail price.

How It Works

You provide us with print-ready PDFs, and we’ll print the books! Print-ready means you give us your book files once they are final–after the writing, editing, design, and layout have been completed, and the files are formatted according to our Submission Guidelines. You can follow our Do-It-Yourself Guidelines or hire someone to help you. We are happy to recommend local freelancer editors and designers.

FEES

The first time an author has their work printed on Paige, they will be charged a set-up fee along with the cost of the books that are printed. The fee depends on the services provided, and the cost of the books depends on the length of the book being printed. Regardless of which option you choose, we will always perform a cursory preview of your files to check for basic layout problems. There is no separate fee for the cover if you provide your own file – the fees detailed below only apply to authors who want us to help them create or assemble a cover file.

Standard Set-up Fee $70 per title
For an author who wants to keep their book on the machine and have long-term flexibility.

This fee includes:

  • preview of files to check for basic layout problems
  • upload of files onto the book machine
  • one free proof copy for author approval
  • free uploading of revisions
  • opportunity to have the book available for sale in the bookstore
  • opportunity to have the book available for sale online at harvardsquarebookstore.com.
  • retention of the files on our book machine, so you may print copies today--and next year

One-Time Set-up Fee, $10 - $25 per title
For an author who only wants to print copies once.

$10 includes:
We print the book as is (after a cursory preview to check for problems). We will load the files on to the machine and print the requested number of copies. The author will pay for all copies printed. The file will be deleted as soon as the print run is finished.

$25 includes:
We print the book as is (after a cursory preview), but if you’re not happy with the first copy you can revise your files. We will load the updated files, and print the requested number of copies. The author will pay for all copies printed. The file will be deleted as soon as the print run is finished.

Cost of Books

After the initial set-up, each book is printed on a price-per-page fee:

40 - 100 pages - For a book between 40 - 100 pages, the cost is $5.00 plus $0.05 per page for pages 41 - 100.

100 + pages - For all other books, the cost is $8.00 for the first 100 pages, plus $0.02 per page for all subsequent pages.

Examples:
  • an 88 page book would be $5 for the first 40 pages, plus an additional 0.05 per page for the remaining 48 pages. So the cost would be 5 + (48 x 0.05) = $7.40.
  • a 250 page book would be $8 for the first 100 pages, plus an additional 0.02 per page for the remaining 150 pages. So the cost would be 8 + (150 x 0.02) = $11.00
